Case Study

The rapid growth of 7-Up 
during the 70s is a classic example of a successful positioning strategy. Rather than position the product as just another soft drink, of which there were dozens, the company positioned 7-Up as the 
“Un-Cola,” an alternative to the many sweet cola drinks. This made 7-Up one of two choices rather than one of two dozen. Its rapid rise from obscurity to number three was a testimony to the correctness of that strategy.
